Apple Watch Series 9: Everything We Know So Far
The Apple Watch is one of the most popular smartwatches on the market, and Apple updates it every year. Last year, Apple released the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch SE 2 and the Apple Watch Ultra. This year, with the iPhone 15, Apple is also expected to release the Apple Watch Series 9. Here’s everything you need to know about the Apple Watch Series 9.
When can we expect the Apple Watch Series 9 to be released?
- The Apple Watch Series 9 might be released in September 2023.
Apple generally launches its Apple Watch alongside the new iPhone. For instance, the Apple Watch Series 8 was launched alongside the iPhone 14 series. So, we can expect the Apple Watch Series 9 to also launch with the iPhone 15 series.
According to rumours, the iPhone 15 series will launch on September 2023. And if the iPhone 15 launches on this day, it is sure that the Apple Watch Series 9 could also launch on the same day.
Apple Watch Series 9 Expected Features
As per several recent reports, the Apple Watch Series 9 will be an incremental update over the Series 8. Apple is focusing more on the Apple Watch Ultra, so we don’t expect to see any major improvements this year.
As for the performance, we are not expecting any major improvements. The S8 chip on the Series 8 is already mighty for an Apple Watch. Plus, the S8 chip isn’t significantly improved over the S7 on the Series 7. Instead of a performance boost, Apple is leaning towards enhancing the efficiency of the S9 chip. An efficiency boost will result in a slightly longer battery life and other benefits.
Speaking of the battery, the actual battery size of the Series 9 is expected to remain the same. However, we might see additional features on the Series 9 that would eventually increase the battery life.
With the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple brought Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity on an Apple Watch. And as you might know, the Series 8 was not fortunate enough to get the latest Bluetooth connectivity. However, Apple is willing to bring Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity to the Series 9. Bluetooth 5.3 will result in faster speed and better connectivity, a good upgrade over the Series 8’s Bluetooth connectivity.
We don’t expect any improvements to the display either. The charging speed shall also remain the same. As for the durability, we don’t know whether or not we will see any improvements as the Series 8 is already very durable.
Apart from the new S9 chip and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, the Series 9 will be essentially the same as the Series 8. It will have the same design, the same display, and the same battery size. Plus, all the features of the Series 8 will also be carried to Series 9. These features include crash detection, ECG monitoring, temperature sensor, menstrual cycle tracking, and more.
Lastly, we can expect Apple to introduce more software features to the Series 9 using the same hardware as the Series 8. We don’t have any information about these features, but we will certainly know more in the future. So stay tuned.
Apple Watch Series 9 Expected Price
- The Apple Watch Series 9 might be priced at $399 for the 41mm GPS variant.
The Apple Watch Series 8 was launched at the same price as the Series 7, as it wasn’t as big of an upgrade. Similarly, since the Series 9 is not a major upgrade, we do not expect a price bump this year. However, if we consider inflation and the chip shortage, Apple could increase the price of the Series 9. If Apple plans to retain the same price, the Apple Watch Series 9 will start at $399.
The Apple Watch Series 9 is expected to be an iterative update with minor improvements. While we hope for no major new features, the Series 9 should still be a solid upgrade for anyone using an older Apple Watch model. As always, we’ll have to wait until the official release to see exactly what Apple has in store.
