Customers are crying out for reasonably priced crossovers and SUVs, and the new 2022 Volkswagen Taos offers yet another option.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

VW's new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Taos.

158 horsepower, 184 torque. All-wheel-drive models have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while front-drive models have an eight-speed.

The all-wheel-drive Taos is rated at 25 mpg city and 32 highway, while the front-drive Taos is rated at 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

On our 75 mph highway fuel-economy route, we tested a front-drive Taos, and it achieved an outstanding 40 mpg.

The Taos is not particularly unique on the inside. The materials and design are similar to other VW models' contemporary styling.

Every dashboard has a digital instrument cluster and two-tone cloth seats. Leather and leatherette are options.

Every Taos includes a stylish entertainment system with a monthly-subscription-only Wi-Fi hotspot. The touchscreen is available in 6.5-inch and 8.0-inch sizes.

Additionally included on the system are wireless smartphone charging, an eight-speaker BeatsAudio audio, built-in navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Volkswagen offers a below-average powertrain warranty and an above-average limited warranty.
